Set up Wi-Fi
The meter joins Wi-Fi so it can sit away from your PC, on any USB charger. It needs a 2.4 GHz network without a username login.
From the app (recommended) #
The app sends your Wi-Fi details to the meter over the USB cable. No phone or network-hopping needed.
- Plug the meter into your PC with the USB cable.
- During setup, choose Add to Wi-Fi in step 3. For a meter you already added, open Settings › Meters and click Set up Wi-Fi (or Change Wi-Fi) on its card.
- Network: pick your network from the list or type its name. Networks marked 5 GHz, not supported won't work unless your router also offers 2.4 GHz under the same name (many do).
- Password: type your Wi-Fi password. It goes to the meter over the cable; the app doesn't keep it.
- Click Connect. After a few seconds you'll see Connected as and the meter's address.
- Unplug the meter and plug it into a charger where you want it. The app finds it on Wi-Fi.
If you see "Couldn't connect. Check the password, and that it's a 2.4 GHz network.", the meter couldn't join. It can't tell a wrong password from a missing or 5 GHz-only network, so check all three and try again.
The network list is empty? Windows only lets apps list nearby networks when Location is on for desktop apps. The app links to that setting, or you can just type the network name.
No Windows PC nearby: the setup hotspot #
A meter that has no Wi-Fi saved, or can't reach its saved network, opens its own Wi-Fi hotspot after it starts. You can use a phone or laptop to give it your Wi-Fi details.
- Plug the meter into a USB charger and wait about a minute.
- On your phone or laptop, join the Wi-Fi network Busy Meter Setup. Password: busymeter
- A setup page should open by itself. If it doesn't, open a browser and go to http://4.3.2.1
- Open the Wi-Fi settings, enter your network name and password, and save.
- The meter restarts and joins your Wi-Fi. The hotspot disappears.
- On your PC (on the same Wi-Fi), add the meter with Flash and tap to claim. See Add your meter.
The hotspot password is the same for every Busy Meter. That's fine: the hotspot only exists while the meter has no working Wi-Fi, and setting up from the app over USB doesn't use it at all.
Changing networks later #
Plug the meter into your PC and use Settings › Meters › Change Wi-Fi. If the meter can't reach its old network (you moved, or changed the router), it also opens the Busy Meter Setup hotspot again.
