Report a problem

Something not working? Send us a report from the app. It tells us what you saw and gives us the app's logs, with anything private taken out. Nothing is sent until you click Send.

Send a report #

  1. Right-click the tray icon and choose Report a problem…. Or open Settings › About & updates and click Report a problem… there.
  2. Under What happened?, say what you did and what went wrong.
  3. Add Your email if you'd like an answer. It's optional.
  4. Leave Include diagnostics and logs (recommended) on: it's what lets us find the cause.
  5. Click Send.

The window then shows your report id, for example BM-7F3K2QXA. Keep it: if you email us about the problem, add the id so we can find your report.

What's in a report #

With Include diagnostics and logs on, the report is one zip file with:

  • what you typed, your email if you gave one, the app version and update channel, your Windows and .NET versions, language and time zone, and how long the app had been running;
  • the same details as Copy diagnostics: your meters, sources, settings and what the meter shows;
  • the app's logs from up to the last 7 days and the updater's log (the oldest days are left out if needed to keep the report under 5 MB);
  • the app's last 500 level decisions (when, which level, which source won);
  • each meter's model, version and preset names (read from the meter, never its Wi-Fi settings);
  • for AI coding agents: which tools are connected, where their hooks are, and how many sessions are working or waiting;
  • crash notes, if the app closed unexpectedly.

With it off, the report holds only what you typed and the versions.

What's never in a report #

Calendar links, sign-ins and passwords, Slack data, meeting titles, Wi-Fi names and passwords, the meter's update lock and settings PIN, your Windows user name and PC name, programs' tokens, and anything your coding agents wrote (prompts, code, transcripts). The app takes these out before the zip is made.

See what's included #

Click See what's included before you send. The app builds the report and opens it in File Explorer, so you can read every file. Nothing has been sent. Send and Save as file then use exactly those files, unless you change what you typed.

Save as file instead #

No internet, or Send says Couldn't send. Save as file instead? Click Save as file, pick where to save the zip, and email it to hello@thebusymeter.com with a few words about the problem.

After a crash #

If Busy Meter closed unexpectedly, the next time it starts it says Busy Meter closed unexpectedly and asks whether to send a report. Report a problem… opens the report window with a note about the crash; Not now closes it. It asks once per crash and never sends anything by itself.

How long we keep it #

Reports go to Busy Meter's own server and are deleted after 90 days. Only we can read them: there's no way to read or list reports from the internet. We use a report only to fix the problem it describes. Your internet address isn't stored with the report.
